NCCU Men’s Tennis Concludes Historic Season with Narrow Loss in UTR Sports NIT Championship

In a thrilling match at the Rome Tennis Center, North Carolina Central's men's tennis team faced off against Chattanooga in the semifinals of the UTR Sports NIT Championship. The Eagles narrowly lost 4-3, marking the end of an impressive season that saw them achieve their highest win total in Division I history. The match was fiercely contested, with victories in doubles and several hard-fought singles matches showcasing the team's talent and resilience. Despite falling short, this season will be remembered for its academic and athletic accomplishments.

The encounter began on a high note for the Eagles as they secured the doubles point through decisive wins by Antoni Pankowski and Leo Fortier-Gariepy at No. 3 and Rodrigo Alves alongside Hugo Hidalgo Vega at No. 1. However, the momentum shifted during singles play when UTC claimed early victories in the No. 5 and followed up with two consecutive wins at positions No. 2 and 6. Yet, Hidalgo Vega and Alves displayed remarkable perseverance, each securing vital victories in three-set battles. Ultimately, Chattanooga sealed the match in the No. 4 singles position.

Throughout the season, the Maroon & Gray squad achieved unprecedented success, concluding with a stellar record of 17-7 overall. This marks the most victories in their Division I era. Notably, Hidalgo Vega earned national recognition with a singles ranking from the ITA, adding another accolade to the team's achievements.

Beyond the court, the NCCU team excelled academically, maintaining a commendable cumulative GPA of 3.85. Graduating seniors Hidalgo Vega and Oliver Saarinen leave behind a legacy of excellence both athletically and intellectually. Their contributions have set a high standard for future teams.

This year’s performance not only solidified North Carolina Central’s place among top-tier competitors but also demonstrated the team's ability to excel under pressure. As the program looks ahead, the lessons learned and records broken this season will undoubtedly inspire the next generation of players to continue building on these successes.
