Nagoshi Studio Shuts Down Following NetEase Funding Withdrawal

Nagoshi Studio, founded by the visionary behind the Yakuza series, Toshihiro Nagoshi, has officially closed its doors. This development follows the cessation of financial backing from its key investor, NetEase. The studio was actively engaged in the production of "Gang of Dragon," a crime drama that aimed to capture the gritty essence of the Yakuza franchise, with actor Ma Dong-seok in a starring role.

Confirmation of the company's dissolution came via Japan's official gazette, Kanpo, on October 31st. Earlier reports from Bloomberg in March indicated that NetEase's decision to discontinue funding was prompted by the substantial additional cost—an estimated 7 billion yen (approximately $44 million)—required to complete "Gang of Dragon." Despite efforts, Nagoshi Studio was reportedly unable to secure another financial partner for the ambitious game.

"Gang of Dragon" made its public debut at the 2025 Game Awards with a cinematic trailer that promised an even more intense and realistic portrayal of Tokyo's criminal underworld than its Yakuza predecessors. This closure aligns with a broader strategy by Chinese gaming titan NetEase, which has been reducing its gaming portfolio and divesting from overseas ventures since 2024, resulting in the closure of several studios, including one led by former World of Warcraft designer Greg Street. Nagoshi Studio itself was established in 2022 by Nagoshi and former colleagues from Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio, the team behind the successful Yakuza/Like a Dragon series, after Nagoshi's three-decade tenure at Sega, where he contributed to titles like "Daytona USA," "Shenmue," and "Super Monkey Ball" before pioneering the Yakuza franchise.

The closure of Nagoshi Studio represents a poignant moment in the gaming industry, underscoring the volatile nature of game development and the critical role of financial stability. It reminds us that even studios led by esteemed creators can face unforeseen challenges, highlighting the importance of robust support and adaptive strategies. Despite this setback, the legacy of Toshihiro Nagoshi's past achievements continues to inspire, demonstrating the enduring impact of creative vision and perseverance in the face of adversity.
