Modern vehicles may be more reliable, but regular servicing remains crucial. A new study shows that 63% of Brits are clueless about car maintenance. Tim Rodie from Motorpoint emphasizes the importance of routine maintenance for cost-conscious drivers.
Stressing the Importance of Routine Maintenance
It's astonishing to discover that many motorists lack confidence in completing basic car maintenance tasks. They don't feel it's their responsibility to know how to make these checks at home. As road users, we all have a duty to keep on top of our car maintenance to ensure safety and roadworthiness.Motorpoint's survey of over 1,000 drivers revealed a discomfort among Brits in checking essential car components. While 81% are comfortable with checking engine oil, over half are uneasy about topping it up. Additionally, 25% of motorists are unsure about inspecting their vehicle's tyres.Taking Car Servicing into Your Own Hands
With motoring costs soaring, Tim urges drivers to take charge. Legally, all cars must have a minimum of 1.6mm thread across the central 75% of any tyre surface. Although tyres are typically checked during servicing, motorists are responsible for ensuring they have a safe amount of tread.Using a simple 20p coin check is the easiest way to measure tyre tread depth at home. Insert the 20p piece into the grooves on each tyre. If you can't see the outer band, you're above the legal limit and safe to drive.Highlighting the Importance of Regular Oil Level Checks
Engine oil is often overlooked, but it's vital for minimizing friction and keeping the vehicle running smoothly. Routine oil level checks help keep the inner workings of the car clean and reduce corrosion, allowing the car to stay in great shape for longer.Drivers are reminded to inspect their oil once a month or before long trips. This simple act can make a big difference in the performance and longevity of their vehicles.
