Moss Games Transition from VR to Nintendo Switch

The captivating virtual reality adventures, "Moss" and "Moss: Book II," are set to expand their reach beyond VR headsets, arriving on Nintendo Switch 1 and 2 this month. These beloved titles, now bundled as "Moss: The Forgotten Relic," are available for pre-order, offering a new way for players to delve into the enchanting world of Quill. This transition marks a significant moment for fans who have long wished to experience these games on a more accessible platform, bringing the magic of Moss to a broader audience.

Polyarc, the developer behind these acclaimed games, has announced that "Moss: The Forgotten Relic" is now open for pre-orders at a price of £15.99 / $19.99. A notable feature for consumers is the inclusion of a complimentary upgrade path for those who initially purchase the game for Switch 1 but later decide to transition to the newer Switch 2 system. This forward-thinking approach ensures that players can enjoy the game regardless of their console generation. The official launch date for this much-anticipated release is July 16th, promising a summer of adventure for Nintendo users.

Cyril Saint Girons, the Engineering Director at Moss, elaborated on the technical enhancements implemented for the Switch 2 version. He highlighted that while the core narrative remains consistent across both Switch platforms, the Switch 2 offers a superior visual experience. This includes a higher resolution, a consistent 60 frames per second, improved anti-aliasing, more refined lighting and visual effects, and an enhanced depth of field. These technical upgrades are designed to accentuate Quill’s character and the grand scale of her surroundings, providing an even more immersive experience for players on the advanced hardware.

Adapting a VR game to a non-VR format presented unique challenges for Polyarc. Saint Girons explained the extensive modifications undertaken to ensure the game felt native to the Switch hardware. This involved developing entirely new camera systems and cutscenes, refining input controls for both traditional controllers and the touchscreen, and rebalancing combat encounters and puzzles. Furthermore, the team thoughtfully reimagined the interaction dynamic between the player, known as 'The Reader,' and Quill, ensuring the emotional connection central to the original VR experience was preserved and effectively translated to a flat screen. The developers emphasized that their goal was not to merely replicate the VR experience, but to thoughtfully adapt the most crucial elements of player-character bonding.

The upcoming release of "Moss: The Forgotten Relic" on Nintendo Switch 1 and 2 is poised to introduce a wider audience to the charming and critically praised world of Quill. This non-VR adaptation promises an enriched visual and gameplay experience, allowing more players to embark on this memorable journey starting July 16th.
