A pioneering initiative has emerged from Grand Rapids, Michigan, aiming to empower and amplify the voices of young individuals through storytelling. Mosaic Film Experience, a nonprofit educational platform, has introduced a mobile film competition titled "Nourishing Narratives: Cultivating Youth Stories For Change." This unique contest invites youth aged 10 to 18 across the United States to explore the concept of food justice through short films created using mobile devices. The competition is generously supported by Newman’s Own Foundation, an organization founded by the late actor Paul Newman, dedicated to transforming the lives of disadvantaged youth.
The competition challenges traditional storytelling methods, encouraging participants to express their perspectives on food justice creatively. According to Skot Welch, founder and president of Mosaic Film Experience, this approach levels the playing field for content creation while fostering essential skills such as creativity, collaboration, and critical thinking. These abilities will benefit students in various future endeavors, including careers, community leadership, and personal development.
Participants are required to submit films up to three minutes long that incorporate a fruit or vegetable as a prop and include the phrase "Tomorrow Starts Here" in some form. The submission period runs from March 7 to April 7. A diverse jury will evaluate the entries, selecting top submissions to be showcased on a dedicated YouTube channel. Up to ten winners will receive monetary awards to support their advocacy efforts in food justice and potentially contribute to Newman’s Own Foundation’s participatory grantmaking process as members of the Foundation Youth Advisory Council.
The initiative aims to inspire innovative solutions and highlight the impact of organizations and individuals working towards a fairer food system. Winners will be announced on June 25, with an award event scheduled for August to celebrate these impactful stories. Alex Amouyel, president and CEO of Newman’s Own Foundation, expressed excitement about launching this project during what would have been Paul Newman’s 100th birthday year, emphasizing its significance in advancing food justice discussions nationally.
This competition not only provides a platform for youth to voice their ideas but also fosters a deeper understanding of food justice issues. By engaging young minds in creative problem-solving, it paves the way for a more equitable and sustainable future in the realm of food systems. The collaboration between Mosaic Film Experience and Newman’s Own Foundation represents a powerful alliance in promoting social change through artistic expression.
