A new chapter in soccer development is set to unfold as Major League Soccer (MLS) introduces the distinguished Elite Formation Coaching License (EFCL) program for 2026. This elite initiative, a collaboration with the French Football Federation (FFF), aims to cultivate top-tier coaching talent and significantly enhance the MLS Player Pathway. Since its inception in 2013, the EFCL has played a pivotal role in shaping numerous influential figures within MLS, including head coaches, academy directors, and chief soccer officers.

This year marks a historic milestone for the EFCL, welcoming a diverse group of participants. The 2026 cohort will include five MLS NEXT Elite Academy coaches alongside 19 MLS coaches, reflecting an expanded scope of influence. Notably, three women are among the candidates, following Erin Ridley's groundbreaking achievement as the first woman from MLS to complete the program in August 2024. The inclusion of these trailblazers underscores MLS's commitment to fostering diversity and excellence in coaching.

The EFCL program will span seven weeks over an 18-month period, commencing in February 2025 and concluding in August 2026. Participants will begin their journey at the renowned Clairefontaine training center near Paris, engaging in intensive sessions that blend theoretical learning with practical observations. Following initial training, coaches will immerse themselves in some of Europe's most prestigious clubs, such as Arsenal, FC Barcelona, and Paris Saint-Germain, gaining invaluable insights into global soccer best practices.

Fred Lipka, MLS Vice President of Player and Youth Development, expressed pride in this initiative: "The sixth edition of the EFCL program exemplifies our dedication to nurturing world-class coaches through our partnership with the FFF. By extending opportunities to MLS NEXT Elite Academy coaches, we are taking a significant step towards broadening the program's impact and reach."

The EFCL's legacy is evident in the success of its alumni, who have made substantial contributions to MLS and MLS NEXT Pro over the past decade. Graduates like Wilfried Nancy and Greg Vanney, winners of MLS Cup, along with other notable figures, highlight the program's effectiveness in producing exceptional leaders in the sport. As the 2026 class embarks on this transformative journey, they carry forward a tradition of excellence and innovation, promising to elevate the standards of soccer coaching worldwide.
