The Eastern South Dakota Conference girls tennis tournament was a showcase of talent, with Watertown and defending champion Aberdeen Central making a strong impression despite not capturing any individual titles. The two-day event featured nine schools competing at the Belmont and Highland Park tennis courts, with Mitchell emerging as the overall team champion.

Watertown's girls tennis team may not have claimed any individual championships, but they proved their depth and resilience by securing a third-place finish in the team standings. Head coach Ryan Zink was proud of his team's performance, noting that it was a "great tournament" and that he was "really proud of all the girls and how they played."The Watertown players put forth a strong showing, with Ellie Zink, Faith Berg, Cayda Weiss, and Jade Smith each finishing as runners-up in their respective singles flights. Leyla Meester and Sophia Nichols also contributed to Watertown's success, with Meester placing third in the third flight and Nichols finishing fifth in the fourth flight.In doubles play, Zink and Meester reached the finals at the No. 1 doubles position, while Weiss and Smith took third in the third flight, and Berg and Nichols placed fifth in the second flight.

Aberdeen Central Showcases Individual Talent, Looks to State Tournament

While Aberdeen Central didn't capture any individual or doubles titles, they had several standout performances that showcased their individual talent. Chloe Ladner recorded runner-up finishes at No. 4 singles and No. 2 doubles, partnering with Reese Comstock. Julie Knie placed third at No. 1 singles, and Comstock took third at No. 3 singles.Other Aberdeen Central players who made their mark included Avery Tennant (fourth at No. 2 singles), Sara Knie (fourth at No. 5 singles), and Ashley Ortega (fourth at No. 6 singles). In doubles, Knie and Tennant teamed up to take third at No. 1 doubles, while Mady Holman and Estelle Riggs placed fourth at No. 3 doubles.

The Class A tournament, scheduled for October 7-8 in Rapid City, will feature area schools like Aberdeen Roncalli and Milbank, with Sioux Falls Christian aiming to defend their title.Coach Zink is optimistic about his team's chances, stating that the ESD will be "well represented" at the state tournament.
