In a remarkable achievement, the fourth/top-seeded Middlebury women’s tennis team secured their first-ever NESCAC Championship title by defeating four-time reigning champion Wesleyan, who were seeded second/fifth. With a decisive 4-1 victory, the Panthers etched their name into history as only the fourth team in the league to claim this prestigious trophy. The match featured intense doubles and singles battles, with standout performances from players like Nina Farhat, Sahana Raman, and Nathalie van der Reis. This win not only marks a significant milestone for the program but also secures Middlebury's automatic entry into the NCAA Tournament.
The doubles competition began with Middlebury's duo of Farhat and Raman seizing control at the top spot. After an initial deadlock, they powered through five consecutive games en route to a commanding 6-1 victory. Meanwhile, Claudia Miller and Elsie Van Wieren faced stiff resistance but managed to establish a dominant 5-2 lead before Wesleyan narrowed the gap to 5-3. Ultimately, Miller and her partner held firm, securing the crucial doubles point for Middlebury.
Transitioning into singles play, Raman continued her impressive form by besting her opponent in straight sets (6-2, 6-3), extending Middlebury's lead to 2-0. However, Wesleyan demonstrated resilience when Lane Durkin clawed back one set with identical 6-4 scores at the second position, reducing the deficit to 2-1. Undeterred, Nathalie van der Reis delivered a critical performance in the fifth slot, sweeping both sets 6-2 to push the scoreline to 3-1 in favor of the Panthers.
In a thrilling finale, Farhat clinched the championship with a hard-fought battle at the sixth spot. Despite dropping the first set 6-1, she rebounded strongly, prevailing 6-1, 6-4 in the subsequent sets to finalize the 4-1 victory for Middlebury.
This contest marked the fourth meeting between Middlebury and Wesleyan in the championship round over recent years, highlighting the rivalry's significance. Throughout their storied matchups, Middlebury now boasts 25 victories out of 35 encounters. Notably, Claudia Miller reached a career milestone by earning her 80th doubles triumph. As champions, the Panthers await further details regarding their NCAA Tournament journey, which will be unveiled on May 5.
