Former UMass running back, CJ Hester, has committed to the Michigan Wolverines this spring, adding depth and experience to their backfield. With two years of eligibility remaining, Hester will compete for the RB3 position alongside Micah Ka’apana and Bryson Kuzdzal. His arrival follows the departure of Benjamin Hall through the transfer portal.
Hester started his collegiate career at Western Michigan in 2023 before transferring to UMass for the 2024 season. During his sophomore year, he showcased his skills by rushing for 529 yards and scoring four touchdowns while also contributing as a receiver with 14 catches for 58 yards. His early promise at WMU included 124 rushing yards and two touchdowns as a true freshman.
The addition of CJ Hester brings valuable experience to the Wolverines' running back corps. As Michigan looks ahead to the future with Jordan Marshall and Justice Haynes set as the primary duo, Hester fills an important role as a reliable backup. His versatility on the field, demonstrated through both rushing and receiving abilities, makes him a strong asset for the team.
Hester’s journey began at Western Michigan, where he made an immediate impact as a true freshman, accumulating 124 rushing yards and two touchdowns on just 29 carries. After transferring to UMass for the 2024 season, he elevated his game further, rushing for 529 yards and scoring four touchdowns. Additionally, his ability to contribute as a receiver adds another dimension to his playmaking capabilities. This combination of skills positions Hester well to compete effectively for the RB3 spot this fall.
With the departure of Benjamin Hall earlier this spring, the Wolverines needed to bolster their running back depth. Hester’s commitment addresses this need, providing the team with a seasoned player who can step into a competitive environment and thrive. He joins Luke Bauer, a former Missouri punter, as part of the spring commitments via the transfer portal.
This fall, Hester will face stiff competition from teammates Micah Ka’apana and Bryson Kuzdzal for the third-string running back position. His experience and proven track record offer a solid foundation as he prepares to contribute meaningfully to the Wolverines' offensive strategy. The presence of multiple talented players ensures that Michigan remains formidable in their backfield, ready to tackle the challenges of the upcoming season with confidence.
