Michigan State Men's Tennis Season Ends in NCAA Tournament

In a compelling second-round clash of the NCAA Tennis Championship, Michigan State Spartans succumbed to Mississippi State Bulldogs with a decisive 4-0 scoreline. This result marked the conclusion of the Spartans' season at the Round of 32 for the second consecutive year. The Spartans showcased commendable resilience despite the setback, highlighting their competitive spirit and skill level against a formidable opponent.

The encounter took place on Saturday, following the Spartans' victory over North Alabama in the opening round on Friday. This marked Michigan State's third appearance in the prestigious NCAA tournament. Despite finishing the season with an impressive 17-10 record, the team could not overcome Mississippi State, who advanced to the NCAA Super Regionals with a current record of 23-5.

A fierce doubles competition set the tone early in the match. The top-ranked duo of Petar Jovanovic and Benito Sanchez secured a crucial 6-4 win over MSU juniors Ozan Baris and Matthew Forbes. However, the Spartans maintained their tenacity as Max and Mitchell Sheldon triumphed in a tiebreak at No. 3 doubles, pushing Max Sheldon’s career wins tally to a new program record of 170.

Despite this achievement, the Bulldogs extended their lead through victories in singles matches at No. 5 and No. 4. Bryan Hernandez Cortes and Dusan Milanovic delivered strong performances, defeating Mitchell Sheldon and Matthew Forbes respectively. The Spartans fought valiantly, forcing third sets in three remaining singles contests, but ultimately fell short.

This matchup carried historical significance as Mississippi State's head coach, Matt Roberts, had previously served as an assistant at Michigan State from 2009 to 2012 under former Spartan coach Gene Orlando.

Though the Spartans concluded their season earlier than hoped, they demonstrated remarkable determination throughout the tournament. Their journey leaves a lasting impression, setting a solid foundation for future competitions. The team can take pride in their accomplishments, knowing they faced one of the strongest contenders in collegiate tennis this year.
