The upcoming title, Mewgenics, following more than ten years of development, is on the horizon. This game revolves around breeding unique felines and engaging them in turn-based combat, or so it appears. An earlier preview indicated a far more intricate experience than initially perceived, hinting at a potentially life-consuming gameplay loop. The game's co-creator has recently confirmed a significant aspect that underscores its depth.
Edmund McMillen, the co-creator, recently showcased a screenshot on X, revealing that Mewgenics will debut with a staggering 280 achievements. This number is quite substantial for a new release. While some Steam titles boast more achievements, these often accrue over years through numerous post-launch updates or belong to the category of low-quality, achievement-farming software. For instance, Team Fortress 2 offers 520 achievements, and Payday 2 astonishingly provides 1328. This trend isn't confined to competitive shooters; the acclaimed traditional roguelike, Tales of Maj'Eyal, features 1782 achievements.
For comparison, McMillen's previous work, The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth, has accumulated 641 achievements over its 11-year lifespan, inclusive of three major expansions. That game was renowned for its capacity to absorb countless hours from players even before these significant additions. The sheer volume of achievements in Mewgenics suggests a similar, if not greater, commitment to player engagement and longevity.
Scheduled for release on February 11, Mewgenics will be available on Steam. This robust achievement system serves as a clear indicator of the game's ambition and the extensive content awaiting players, promising a rich and enduring gameplay experience that will challenge and reward dedicated gamers.
