Vaqueros Tennis Shines at Jake Frederick Memorial Islander Open

The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros men's tennis team showcased their talent and determination at the Jake Frederick Memorial Islander Open in Corpus Christi, Texas. Despite facing stiff competition, the Vaqueros' young squad demonstrated their potential, with several players earning impressive wins and pushing their opponents to the limit.

Unlocking the Vaqueros' Potential on the Court

Freshmen Shine in Singles Play

The Vaqueros' freshmen players made a strong impression, with Loic Young Kriegel earning his first collegiate victory in the singles Orange West stage. Young Kriegel defeated Marco Rodriguez from Incarnate Word in a convincing 6-4, 6-2 performance. The young talent will look to continue his success as he faces Lukas Hamacher of Lamar in the 5-6 match of the Orange bracket on Sunday.

Bonaguro Leads the Way in Doubles and Singles

Sophomore Paolo Bonaguro showcased his versatility, capturing two impressive wins on Saturday. Teaming up with fellow sophomore Will Roberts, Bonaguro and his partner defeated the Abilene Christian duo of Alejandro Verdasco and Merse Deli 6-3 in the doubles Blue West stage. The Vaqueros' dynamic duo will look to maintain their momentum as they face Lamar's Haruki Omori-Cowie and Guy Dagan in the 5-6 match of the top doubles draw on Sunday.In singles play, Bonaguro earned a convincing 6-3, 6-2 victory over Guy Dagan in the West stage of the Purple singles draw, demonstrating his strong all-around game.

Serrano and Menezes Push Owls Duo in Doubles

The UTRGV doubles team of sophomore Santiago Serrano and freshman Eduardo Menezes competed well in the Green Semifinal match, pushing Rice's Petro Kuzmenok and Gabriel Porras to extra games. However, the Owls duo ultimately prevailed with a 7-5 win.

Smyth's Valiant Effort in Singles

Freshman Isaac Smyth showcased his fighting spirit, pushing his singles Yellow Semifinal match to a 10-point tiebreaker in the third frame. Despite his valiant effort, Porras of Rice emerged victorious with a 3-6, 6-2, 1-0 (10-2) win.

Tough Battles for Serrano, Roberts, and Gamez

Several other Vaqueros players, including sophomore Santiago Serrano, sophomore Will Roberts, and freshman Brownsville St. Joseph alum Francisco Gamez, competed hard in three-set matches in their respective singles draws but were unable to secure the wins.
