McLaren Unveils 720-hp Pure V6 Track Car, the MCL-HY GTR

McLaren has announced the release of a new track-focused vehicle, the MCL-HY GTR, a direct descendent of their forthcoming MCL-HY endurance racer set to debut in the FIA WEC Hypercar class in 2027. This exclusive machine, available only to McLaren's elite clientele, deviates from its racing counterpart by shedding its hybrid components, resulting in a lighter and more potent track experience.

The MCL-HY GTR is powered by a twin-turbocharged 2.9-liter V6 engine, delivering approximately 720 horsepower. By eliminating the Motor Generator Unit (MGU) and other hybrid elements, engineers have achieved a significant weight reduction, with the GTR expected to weigh less than 1,000 kilograms (2,204 pounds), a considerable decrease from the race car's minimum curb weight of 1,030 kilograms (2,270 pounds). This pure V6 setup also grants the GTR a power advantage over the hybrid MCL-HY FIA Hypercar, which produces up to 697 horsepower. This engineering philosophy mirrors Ferrari’s approach with its 499P Modificata, which also surpasses its WEC counterpart in power while retaining its electric motor.

This innovative project is the fruit of an unprecedented collaboration between McLaren's racing and automotive divisions, with both the Hypercar and GTR models developed simultaneously on a carbon-fiber monocoque chassis. Track testing for the Hypercar is slated to commence this month, leading up to its 2027 racing debut, while deliveries of the customer-specific GTRs are anticipated by the end of next year. Purchasers of the GTR will also be granted access to an exclusive two-year, six-event track driving program on international circuits, complete with a dedicated pit crew and professional driver coaching, emphasizing the vehicle’s elite status and performance capabilities. While pricing remains undisclosed, it is expected to command a substantial figure, eclipsing even the W1's $2.1 million starting price.
