The Kentucky Wildcats men's tennis team kicked off their 2024-2025 season with impressive performances at the Louisville Invitational and the SEC Challenge in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. Breysach Shines in Debut as a Wildcat
In his first action as a Kentucky Wildcat, junior Martin Breysach made a significant impact, claiming the singles title at the Louisville Invitational. The Strasbourg, France native, a transfer from Baylor, navigated through a challenging draw, defeating a series of formidable opponents to reach the championship match. Breysach's impressive run culminated in a hard-fought 7-6(6), 7-5 victory over Gabrielius Guzauskas of Illinois, showcasing his resilience and skill on the court.Breysach's journey to the title began on Friday, where he dispatched Mathys Bove of Southern Indiana in straight sets. The Frenchman then won twice on Saturday, sweeping past Kyran Magimay of Notre Dame in the quarterfinals before overcoming a tough three-set battle against Louisville's Piet Steveker. Despite dropping the first set to Steveker, Breysach responded by taking the second set and clinching the match in a tiebreaker.In addition to his singles success, Breysach also paired up with freshman Eric Crivei in doubles, where the duo split a pair of matches on Friday. Crivei, making his debut as a Wildcat, also competed in singles, narrowly missing out on a victory in a third-set tiebreaker.Weekes Dominates at SEC Challenge
While Breysach was making waves in Louisville, four Wildcats, including Jaden Weekes, were showcasing their talents at the SEC Challenge in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. Weekes, a junior from Montreal, Quebec, Canada, had a standout weekend, remaining undefeated in singles play.Weekes, a member of the All-SEC second team last season, was dominant throughout the tournament, winning all six sets and dropping only 14 games across his three matches. The Wildcat standout recorded victories over players from Florida, Oklahoma, and Mississippi State, demonstrating his ability to compete at the highest level.In doubles, Weekes paired up with sophomore Eli Stephenson, but the duo fell in a pro set tiebreaker to the Florida duo of Kevin Edengren and Magnus Johnson. Stephenson was forced to retire in his opening singles match and did not compete further in the tournament.Rankin and Cosnet Contribute to Wildcats' Success
Sophomore Matt Rankin and freshman Charlelie Cosnet also represented the Wildcats at the SEC Challenge, with both players showcasing their talents on the singles court.Rankin, a Scot, had a successful weekend, winning two of his three singles matches. The sophomore picked up straight-set victories over Vanderbilt's Callum Markowitz and Bradley Paliska of Florida, with his only loss coming in three sets against Oklahoma's Bruno Nhavene.Cosnet, a native of Le Mans, France, also made his mark, earning a straight-set win over Dylan Charlap of Vanderbilt. The freshman, however, dropped his other two singles matches against opponents from Oklahoma and Florida. Cosnet and Rankin also paired up in doubles, but were unable to record a victory in their three matches.Looking Ahead to the ITA All-American Championships
The Wildcats' strong performances at the Louisville Invitational and SEC Challenge have set the stage for their next challenge, the ITA All-American Championships in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
