Martha’s Vineyard Tennis Teams Triumph in League Championships

The Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School tennis teams have achieved remarkable success, as both the boys and girls squads clinched the Atlantic Cape Cod League championships. With an impressive 10-0 league record and a 15-1 overall season, the teams showcased their dominance throughout the competition. Their championship titles were secured early due to consistent performances that left rivals unable to catch up. The girls' team, in particular, triumphed over Falmouth in a challenging match earlier this month, sealing their undefeated league status. Coach Bill Rigali attributed the team's success to experienced players, strong leadership, and a focus on fundamentals.

Under the guidance of Coach Bill Rigali, the girls' team demonstrated exceptional skill and depth. Returning players like sophomores Laina Dubin and Leah Thomson, along with seniors Elle Pennington, Ella Moran, and Clementine Zeender, played pivotal roles in the team's achievements. The captains—seniors Ellie Pennington and Sophie Winters, alongside sophomore Laina Dubin—provided crucial leadership, fostering teamwork and focus. Rigali highlighted how returning players significantly improved their game, gaining valuable experience from the previous year. This development was instrumental in transforming last year's 7-win record into this season's 15-match success.

Beyond the core starters, the team benefited immensely from its depth. Players such as sophomores Tessa Schulz and Maple Martone, junior Eleanore Mone, and sophomore Winters stepped up during key moments, ensuring victories even when regular players were unavailable. Rigali noted that having eight to nine reliable players contributed greatly to the team's consistency and resilience. “They won almost all the matches they participated in,” he remarked, emphasizing the importance of every player's contribution.

Community support, proper preparation, and maintaining enjoyment in the sport were other factors Rigali identified as critical to the team's achievements. He encouraged his athletes to concentrate on mastering the fundamentals and preparing thoroughly both on and off the court. “If they stay true to these values, everything else falls into place,” Rigali added.

Both teams are now set for the state playoffs, hosting their opening matches at Fennessy Courts on the Island. While specific schedules remain undetermined as of Tuesday, anticipation is high for their continued success. Similarly, the boys' team, led by Head Coach Nicole Macy, mirrored the girls' dominance this season, reinforcing Martha’s Vineyard's reputation as a powerhouse in regional tennis competitions.
