Dec 9, 2024 at 7:15 PM
Dyamund Shields, a food truck operator, was tragically killed and five others were wounded in a mass shooting near East 70th Terrace and Prospect Avenue in Kansas City, Missouri. Derrion Turner, a man who initially denied any involvement, is now facing serious charges including second-degree murder, armed criminal action, and firearm-related offenses.

Family's Grief and Shields' Life

Nechelle Kidd, Shields' mother, expressed her deep sorrow after the murder. "He was just incredible," she said. "Had a love for his children, his siblings, this community — he loved doing what he was doing, and that was working his food truck." Shields was at the scene with his Chicken Mac-n-Cheese food truck, a part of his life that brought joy to many.

Surveillance and Evidence

Video surveillance played a crucial role in the case. It showed Turner around four vehicles parked near 7022 Prospect Avenue. A detective who examined the surveillance video noted that a man in the video bore a resemblance to Turner, who was wearing black shorts, a black T-shirt, and black tennis shoes. Additionally, Turner had been released from federal custody, and GPS information from his ankle monitor revealed his presence in the area at the time of the shooting. He was seen standing around vehicles with a group of people carrying visible firearms. When another group walked by, one of the men in the second group turned and looked at Turner's group. In response, Turner pulled out a gun and opened fire. There was a chaotic exchange of gunfire from multiple people attending the gathering, resulting in multiple injuries and one death.

Legal Proceedings and Resources

Turner is accused in Jackson County Court of second-degree murder, two counts of armed criminal action, unlawful possession of a firearm, and unlawful use of a firearm.
