As a young student, he grappled with hyperactivity and a one-finger playing technique, but his orchestra teacher, David Sowerby, saw potential in him and provided the guidance and encouragement he needed to flourish. Through countless hours of practice and dedication, Kumapayi honed his skills, eventually earning a spot under the tutelage of Maximilian Dimoff, the principal bassist of the Cleveland Orchestra.However, Kumapayi's musical education had a glaring omission – the works of African composers. It was not until university that he realized the lack of representation of African musical traditions in the classical canon. Determined to rectify this, Kumapayi set out to seek out and champion the compositions of African artists, only to face a series of obstacles.

Bridging the Digital Divide and Empowering African Composers

One of the primary challenges Kumapayi encountered was the difficulty in accessing and purchasing sheet music directly from African countries. The limited availability of digital payment services in certain regions, coupled with the unfair distribution of royalties by major publishers, hindered the ability of African composers to share their work and receive fair compensation.Undeterred, Kumapayi founded the Àkójọpọ̀ Music Foundation, a Chicago-based nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting pan-African art music and the artists behind the instruments. Through Àkójọpọ̀'s new e-commerce platform, Kumapayi aims to empower African composers by offering them a fair share of the proceeds from their sheet music sales, ensuring that they are rightfully compensated for their creative contributions.
