The Broome County Farmers Market grounds were abuzz with the flavors of the season as the annual "Fresh Food Face Off" event unfolded. This culinary showcase, hosted by the Cornell Cooperative Extension of Broome County, brought together a diverse array of local restaurants and student chefs, each determined to showcase their culinary prowess.

More than a dozen local restaurants and student chefs took center stage, presenting a myriad of creative and mouthwatering dishes. The event was a testament to the depth of culinary talent within the community, with both seasoned professionals and aspiring culinarians showcasing their skills.Executive Director of Cornell Cooperative Extension Beth Roberts expressed her awe at the level of talent on display, stating, "The talent that is in the room is amazing. From culinary students to professional chefs that have been in our community for many years, they are so talented. We are so thankful for their generosity."

Those who attended the event were treated to a veritable feast for the senses, as the chefs unleashed their creativity. Attendee River Sanford raved about the "chicken surf and turf" from BOCES, noting that the unexpected combination of flavors was "delicious" and exceeded their expectations.The event's focus on fresh, locally sourced ingredients was a point of pride for the participating chefs. SUNY Broome Student Chef Danielle Gardner emphasized the importance of using fresh produce, stating, "Fresh ingredients are always important for everybody to use. It's healthier for you and you know where it comes from."

For the student chefs, the Fresh Food Face Off provided a unique opportunity to gain valuable experience beyond the confines of the classroom. BOCES Student Chef Lauren Stevens expressed her excitement, saying, "It's exciting. You get to see the diversity and also you get so much experience talking to locals and cooking all of the stuff."The event not only showcased the students' culinary talents but also allowed them to engage with the community, honing their communication and customer service skills. It was a chance for them to apply their classroom knowledge in a real-world setting, preparing them for the challenges and rewards of the culinary industry.
