A regional food charity is appealing to local enterprises for assistance in addressing a recurring shortage of donations that typically occurs at the beginning of each year. FareShare Sussex and Surrey reports experiencing a significant decline in contributions during the first four months, a period they refer to as the 'Hunger Gap'. The organization encourages businesses within the food industry to contribute surplus items such as imperfect vegetables, products with limited shelf life, and mislabeled goods. According to Dan Slatter, the CEO, meeting the heightened demand for nourishment during the colder months poses an escalating challenge.

Agricultural firm Barfoots, a supporter of this initiative, emphasizes the moral imperative behind donating excess food. A representative from the company expressed pride in backing the charity's efforts to serve their community. Previously, FareShare depended on imported or greenhouse-grown produce; however, rising energy expenses and adverse weather conditions have made this approach less viable. George Shaw, the charity's food supply manager, noted that unfavorable climatic factors and cooler temperatures restrict the diversity of available crops and can interfere with the growing cycles of various fruits and vegetables.
