In an upcoming Tahlequah Community Playhouse After Dark event, "Mark Twain Dreaming," the acting skills of a local musician and artist will be on full display. Dennis Tibbits, who grew up in Stilwell and attended Northeastern State University in Tahlequah, has a diverse range of talents. After moving to Arkansas for a decade to attend the University of Arkansas and then returning to care for his parents in Stilwell, Tibbits now spends most of his free time in Tahlequah.

His Artistic Pursuits

Tibbits has been passionate about art since childhood. He participated in art classes throughout high school and college, with his art teacher providing crucial support and building his confidence. Since retiring, his art has truly flourished. He particularly enjoys painting landscapes, especially notable spots along the Illinois River, which holds a special place in his heart. He undertakes many commissioned works, focusing on locations or animals important to his clients.

His paintings can be found at Tahlequah Creates Gallery, where he volunteers every Tuesday. This gives him the opportunity to share his art with the community and connect with fellow art enthusiasts.

Guitar Playing and Musical Journey

Tibbits started playing guitar in high school and has never stuck to a single genre. Over the years, he has played a wide variety of music. Today, he focuses on playing jazz and jazz fusion by jamming with other local musicians. However, he admits that as he gets older, it takes more energy to perform, and he now devotes more time to theater.

His musical journey showcases his versatility and love for different forms of music, adding another dimension to his creative life.

The Acting Adventure

During a festival, while playing a set, a friend of his wife suggested he try acting and encouraged him to audition with the TCP. Since then, Tibbits has been acting for 12 years. His favorite performances include "Our Show" and "Fiddler on the Roof." Many people didn't think a small theater company could produce a production like "Fiddler on the Roof," but Tibbits and the TCP proved them wrong.

In "Mark Twain Dreaming," the play will feature several short vignettes inspired by Mark Twain's works, with Tibbits portraying Samuel Clemens and introducing the audience to how Clemens became the renowned author Mark Twain. His acting chops will shine on the stage during this event.

After a successful career as a speech language pathology professor, Tibbits is now enjoying retirement and has the time to pursue his passions. His acting and art will take the stage during "Mark Twain Dreaming" at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Tahlequah on December 13-14, starting at 7:30 p.m. Admission is by donation.
