Lexus LC500h Faces New Challenges in SUPER GT

In the competitive world of SUPER GT, Hiroto Kaneso, the team boss of apr, has acknowledged that the non-hybrid version of the Lexus LC500 could potentially outperform its hybrid counterpart this season. The introduction of a second apr-built LC500 in the GT300 class for 2025, fielded by LM Corsa, marks a significant shift. Unlike the No. 31 apr car that debuted in 2023, this new entrant will be equipped with Dunlop tires and lack a hybrid system.

The lighter weight of the non-hybrid LC500 is expected to give LM Corsa an advantage over the factory-supported No. 31 machine. While the hybrid LC500h weighed in at 1383 kg during the final race of the 2024 season, including a 95 kg Balance of Performance adjustment, other GTA-GT300 cars ranged between 1305 kg and 1343 kg. This weight disparity could significantly impact performance on the track. Kaneso expressed optimism about the potential speed and handling of the new configuration, noting the strong chassis and downforce capabilities of the LC500.

Looking ahead, apr has also introduced a new strategy for its No. 31 Lexus LC500h. Following last year's challenges with Toyota junior drivers Kazuto Kotaka and Jin Nakamura, who struggled with incidents and limited mileage, the team has opted for a fresh lineup featuring Oliver Rasmussen and Miki Koyama. The focus now shifts towards ensuring driver comfort and minimizing errors. Kaneso emphasized that the team will prioritize achieving around 80 percent of the car's potential while allowing ample time for the drivers to gain experience. Supported by third driver Yuki Nemoto, the new crew showed promising signs during their initial tests at Fuji Speedway. Kaneso expressed confidence in the trio's abilities, particularly impressed by Rasmussen's quick adaptation and feedback on the Bridgestone tires.

This strategic shift reflects apr's commitment to fostering a supportive environment for its drivers, aiming to build a solid foundation for success in the upcoming season. By prioritizing reliability and driver development, the team hopes to secure a more consistent and competitive performance in the highly demanding SUPER GT series. The innovative approach underscores the importance of adaptability and teamwork in motorsport, setting a positive example for others in the industry.
