Laurel Park Stakes: Ms. Bucchero and Spencerian Face Off Against Top Competition

In an eagerly anticipated event, two recent Laurel Park stakes winners, Ms. Bucchero and Spencerian, are set to compete in the prestigious $100,000 What A Summer Stakes this Saturday. The six-furlong race is part of a larger program featuring four stakes races with a combined purse of $350,000. However, the local favorites may face stiff competition from two formidable challengers traveling from out of state.

The contenders bring impressive pedigrees into the race. Ms. Bucchero, trained by Diane Morici, demonstrated her prowess in November when she secured victory in the Willa On the Move stakes. Her assistant trainer, Colton Moore, noted that six furlongs suits her best, despite some initial concerns about the distance. Meanwhile, Spencerian, under the guidance of Hugh McMahon, triumphed in the Politely Stakes in December. Since being claimed for $16,000 in 2023, Spencerian has shown remarkable improvement, winning four out of six races last year.

Beyond the local talent, the field includes two prominent shippers. Kant Hurry Love, trained by David Duggan, is favored at 7-5 on the morning line and boasts seven career wins, nearing $600,000 in earnings. This race will be her final appearance before heading to the Fasig-Tipton sales in February. Additionally, St. Benedicts Prep, trained by Linda Rice, arrives fresh off a commanding win at Aqueduct. Known for her adaptability, St. Benedicts Prep can adjust her racing style to fit various scenarios, making her a versatile competitor. Completing the field are Happy Clouds and Don’t Tell Kelly, adding further depth to the competition.

The What A Summer Stakes promises to be a thrilling showcase of equine athleticism and strategic racing. With a mix of seasoned veterans and emerging stars, the event underscores the spirit of competition and the pursuit of excellence in horse racing. It highlights the dedication of trainers and owners who strive to bring out the best in their animals, reflecting the positive values of perseverance and sportsmanship.
