KSLA's Coats for Kids is an initiative that has been a part of the Shreveport community for 36 years. This year, it is once again kicking off on Wednesday, bringing together the community for a great cause - to keep thousands of kids warm during the winter months. Organizers are inviting the entire community to support this initiative and make a difference in the lives of these children.

Warm Hearts, Warm Coats - KSLA's Coats for Kids

Starting the Initiative

As the temperatures begin to drop this year, new and gently used coats will be distributed to kids throughout Northwest Louisiana. The initiative will begin with students in Bossier and Caddo parishes on December 10-12. Teachers and counselors in schools play a crucial role in identifying the kids who need a coat. They come in and choose coats in the appropriate sizes during the teacher giveaway. This initiative not only provides coats but also ensures that each donated coat is cleaned by the Porter's team. Zippers and buttons are fixed if needed, ensuring that the kids receive coats that are in good condition.

The Big Giveaway

The big giveaway will take place on January 4 at Porter's Cleaners on Southfield Road in Shreveport. Last year, more than 1,200 coats were given away, but there is always a need for more, especially for older kids who may require larger coats. If you have the ability to purchase a larger coat, it would be greatly appreciated.Heather Porter Price, the operations director for Porter's Fine Dry Cleaners, emphasizes the importance of this initiative. "There are kids in our community that don't have a coat. On those cold and rainy days, they are without proper warmth. Our community's generosity comes through, and we are an avenue to warm these kids."Price herself had a profound experience when she was in high school and worked at the giveaway. She witnessed the joy on the kids' faces when they were able to pick a coat that fit them perfectly.

Donation Opportunities

Until January 3, you can drop off coats or make cash donations at any Porter's Cleaners and Ashley Ridge Optical locations throughout the area. Your contribution will directly help keep kids warm this winter. This initiative is a testament to the community's spirit and willingness to come together for a good cause. By supporting Coats for Kids, you are making a lasting impact on the lives of Northwest Louisiana kids.
