Unlock the Potential of Young Minds with Deptford Library's Culinary and Creative Fusion

Cooking, Art, and Science: A Multifaceted Approach to Learning

The Deptford library's Cooking Club Jr. and Story Time program has undergone a transformative change, expanding its scope to provide a well-rounded educational experience for children in the early grades. Instead of solely focusing on food preparation, the weekly sessions will now rotate through a diverse array of activities, including art, science, and cooking. One week, participants might delve into the world of renowned Mexican painter Frida Kahlo, reading a story about her life and creating a portrait in her distinctive style. Another week, they might explore the wonders of science by cooking up a batch of microwaved baked apples or crafting a captivating volcano. The possibilities are endless, as the library's dedicated team of children's librarians and educators work tirelessly to curate a dynamic and engaging curriculum.

Expanding Opportunities for Younger Learners

The Cooking Club Jr. and Story Time program was originally designed for older children, but the library recognized the need to include younger students as well. "It was created out of almost a year's worth of noticing how disappointed kindergarten- through-second graders were when they found out that the Deptford library had a cooking, science and art class, but they were too young for it," explains children's librarian Sarah Kramer. The library's decision to expand the program to include younger participants has been met with overwhelming enthusiasm from both children and their parents. "We had a tiny taste – no pun intended – in the summer of creating cheese and tomato ladybugs," Kramer recalls, "and then Rice Krispie treats and candy sushi. Both were wildly popular with children and their grownups."

Fostering Creativity and Curiosity

The Cooking Club Jr. and Story Time program is more than just a series of activities; it's a gateway to a world of exploration and self-expression. By seamlessly blending cooking, art, and science, the library aims to ignite the curiosity of young learners and encourage them to embrace their creativity.Through hands-on experiences, children will have the opportunity to experiment with new ingredients, techniques, and materials, all while immersed in captivating stories and narratives. This multifaceted approach not only enhances their culinary skills but also fosters a deeper appreciation for the arts and sciences, laying the foundation for a well-rounded education.

Accessibility and Inclusivity

The Cooking Club Jr. and Story Time program is designed to be accessible and inclusive for all children in the community. The sessions are offered free of charge, and registration is simple, requiring only a phone call or in-person visit to the library. A library card is not even necessary, ensuring that every child has the opportunity to participate and explore their interests.By removing financial and logistical barriers, the Deptford Free Public Library is making a concerted effort to ensure that no child is left behind. This commitment to accessibility and inclusivity aligns with the library's mission to serve as a hub of learning and community engagement, empowering young minds to reach their full potential.
