Efforts to bolster Kansas's food infrastructure have taken a significant step forward with the announcement of additional funding opportunities. The Kansas Department of Agriculture (KDA) has opened applications for a fresh round of grants under the Resilient Food Systems Infrastructure (RFSI) program. This initiative aims to fortify mid-level supply chain operations by providing competitive grants for projects that enhance capacity and infrastructure in various stages of agricultural product handling, from aggregation to distribution. Focused on local and regional crops designated for human consumption, excluding meat and poultry products, the RFSI program continues to support sustainable growth in the agricultural sector.
A specialized category of grants, known as Simplified Equipment-Only Grants, is now accessible to eligible applicants. These grants offer financial assistance ranging from $10,000 to $50,000 without requiring any cost-sharing or matching funds. Tailored exclusively for equipment purchases, these grants ensure that recipients can acquire necessary tools up to the specified limit. With an expedited timeline, all equipment acquisitions must be finalized by December 31, 2025. Eligible entities include Kansas-based food and farm businesses, nonprofit organizations, governmental bodies, and educational or medical institutions. Notably, previous grant recipients are ineligible to apply during this round.
Innovation and collaboration are key components in advancing sustainable agricultural practices. By investing in critical infrastructure and technology, the RFSI program fosters resilience within the food supply chain while promoting economic development across communities. Applications for these grants must be submitted by July 18, 2025, and will undergo a rigorous evaluation process conducted jointly by KDA and the USDA’s Agricultural Marketing Service. Criteria such as project necessity, anticipated results, feasibility, and community impact will play pivotal roles in determining successful candidates. This initiative underscores the importance of strategic investment in strengthening local economies and ensuring reliable access to essential agricultural products.
