The legal proceedings have commenced in Polk County for a heart-wrenching case involving the death of a young child. On Monday, jurors began their selection process to determine the fate of Tracey Nix, a former educator from Hardee County. She faces charges of aggravated manslaughter after her 7-month-old granddaughter tragically perished after being left unattended in a sweltering vehicle over two years ago. Due to extensive media coverage, the trial was relocated from Hardee County to ensure a fair and impartial judgment.

This unfortunate incident unfolded on November 1, 2022, when Nix took custody of Uriel Schock while her daughter attended a personal appointment. After running errands with friends, Nix returned home but neglected to remove Uriel from the car. According to court documents, she engaged in various activities inside her house before realizing the baby was still in the vehicle. This tragic event marked the second loss of a grandchild under Nix's supervision within a year. In December 2021, another toddler, Ezra, drowned after wandering into a pond near Nix’s residence while she was asleep.

The community is grappling with profound sorrow and complex emotions surrounding this case. Nix, who dedicated nearly four decades to education as a principal and teacher, has been described by her attorney as someone who deeply loved her family. However, the parents of the deceased children, Kaila Schock-Nix and Drew Schock, expressed deep anguish and an inability to forgive the negligence that led to their children's deaths. The parents emphasized the paramount responsibility of safeguarding their children, underscoring the importance of vigilance and care in childcare. If found guilty, Nix could face up to three decades behind bars, serving as a somber reminder of the irreversible consequences of momentary lapses in judgment.
