Early Beginnings and Musical Influences

Johnny Mathis' love for music took root at a young age. He learned his first song, "My Blue Heaven," from his father. At just 8 years old, he witnessed his father dismantling an old upright piano to make it fit into their small San Francisco apartment. These early memories have remained with him and are deeply ingrained in his performances of holiday songs. "Those are the memories I have when I sing these Christmas songs," Mathis said. "And then to get lucky and fortunate enough to have (the songs) become staples every year for the listening public – it’s just everything that I ever dreamed of, because it brings back their memory to me every time I hear them."

Musical Achievements and Notable Albums

Throughout his extensive career, Mathis has achieved remarkable feats. He is a Grammy-nominated artist and has recorded close to 80 albums, with six of them being Christmas albums. His most popular songs, such as "Chances Are," "Misty," "It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year," and "It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas," have touched the hearts of millions around the world. His music has a unique ability to evoke emotions and create a festive atmosphere during the holiday season.

At 87 years old, Mathis shows no signs of slowing down. He firmly believes that he can keep singing for the rest of his life and is focused on pacing himself. His upcoming holiday performance at MPAC, located at 100 South St. in Morristown, will be a highlight of the season.
