The report indicates that an impressive 85.8% of developers now utilize AI in their work, a substantial increase from 51% reported just the previous year. Furthermore, a separate survey conducted in July focusing on online game developers in Japan revealed a 100% AI adoption rate.
Benefits and Implementation Strategies of AI in Japan
A more detailed breakdown from the CESA survey shows that 63% of respondents actively engage with generative AI tools daily, while another 22.8% use them on a less frequent basis. The survey, however, did not differentiate between specific AI applications such as code generation, concept art creation, in-game asset development, or text generation. Developers commonly cited enhanced efficiency, reduced costs, and faster development cycles as primary advantages. To mitigate potential issues, common safety protocols include human verification and the avoidance of AI-generated content in customer-facing aspects of their games.

In stark contrast to their Japanese counterparts, North American game developers exhibit a more hesitant approach to AI integration. A similar GDC 2026 survey found that only 36% of North American developers employ AI tools in their professional capacities. A significant majority, 52% of those surveyed, expressed concerns that generative AI is having a detrimental effect on the industry.
