Former junior middleweight titleholder Israil Madrimov found himself facing a significant setback as he had to pull out of his highly anticipated December 21 fight against Serhii Bohachuk in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. This unexpected turn of events was due to an illness, as confirmed by Turki Alalshikh.

Unforeseen Illness Forces Titleholder's Exit from Boxing Bout

Initial Scheduled Fight

Uzbekistan's Madrimov, with a record of 10-1 (7 KOs), had been on a path to face Bohachuk in the co-main event as chief support for the Oleksandr Usyk-Tyson Fury rematch. However, fate had other plans.

Madrimov had shown great determination and skill in his previous fights, but this time, an acute bronchitis diagnosis put his plans on hold. It was a disappointing moment for both the fighter and his fans.

The news spread quickly, and the boxing community was left wondering about the future of the fight card and Madrimov's career. His absence raised questions about the stability of the event and the impact it would have on the other fighters involved.

Replacement and Rescheduling

In a swift move, British fighter Ishmael Davis was brought in to replace Madrimov. Davis, 13-1 (6 KOs), a 29-year-old from Leeds, U.K., had his own challenges as he had most recently dropped a majority decision to Josh Kelly in September at London's Wembley Stadium.

Davis now had the opportunity to step into the ring and prove himself in a high-profile fight. The rescheduling of the Madrimov-Bohachuk bout to February 22 added an extra layer of excitement to the fight calendar.

Promoter Tom Loeffler of 360 Promotions praised Bohachuk's willingness to take on the replacement fight. "Serhii didn't hesitate to take the Madrimov fight. It's unfortunate that [Madrimov] got sick," said Loeffler. "He didn't hesitate to agree to fight Ishmael Davis as a replacement opponent. Serhii wants to continue to prove that he's the best in the division and is looking forward to fighting in Riyadh and appreciates the support from His Excellency Turki Alalshikh and Riyadh Season."

Pre-Fight Speculation

Cynics were not surprised by Madrimov's withdrawal. Speculation had already been rife around the boxing world that he might struggle to fulfill both of his scheduled fights.

The first fight against Bohachuk, a very good fighter and a big puncher, was seen as a tough test. And the prospect of facing Vergil Ortiz just two months later added to the doubts.

Ortiz's trainer Robert Garcia was among those who expressed skepticism. "I'm surprised, I'm confused," he said of Madrimov being announced as Ortiz's foe. "If you've got a hard fight like Bohachuk Dec. 21 … to fight two months after against a very tough opponent, it's really hard to believe that's going to happen. My only guess is [Madrimov] doesn't fight Dec. 21 and waits until February. Or, if he does fight Bohachuk, we're going to have to find someone else."
