Financial Considerations in Funding
Michigan Outdoor Innovation Fund Managing Director Jim Baker emphasized that several factors determine who gets funding and the amount. "We look at their financial statements, engage with their strategic partners and pilot installation partners. This gives us an understanding of whether they are on the right track and if there is a genuine customer opportunity," Baker explained. Typically, a company can expect to receive between 50 to 100 thousand dollars from the fund.
For instance, U.P. based Electric Outdoors, one of the recipients, received $175,000. Founder Josef Hjelmaker stated that this funding will assist in creating more e-o canopies, enabling people to enjoy the outdoors more. "It will help us launch pilot units with strategic customers in key locations. By learning from these units and collecting data, we can refine and scale our operations. It is a crucial step in moving the company towards growth," Hjelmaker said.
Nurturing Local Ideas and Enriching the State
Baker highlighted that the goal of these investments is to foster local ideas and enhance the outdoor aspect of the state. "Through this fund, we are enabling growth. The entire state benefits, including manufacturers, outdoor enthusiasts and the region. We believe this is a remarkable opportunity for the area," Baker stated.
These investments have the potential to create a ripple effect, stimulating the local economy and providing more opportunities for both businesses and outdoor lovers. It shows the state's commitment to developing and supporting the outdoor recreation sector.
Baker hopes that each of these companies will make the most of these investments and expand, attracting even more investors. This initiative is set to play a significant role in shaping Michigan's outdoor future.
