On February 17, 2025, in Estill, South Carolina, the American Heart Association (AHA) welcomed a remarkable young individual to share his personal story with students at Patrick Henry Academy. Seventeen-year-old Mac Gohagan, a local heart hero, recounted his harrowing experience with heart failure and subsequent transplant. This event marked the launch of the AHA’s annual Kids Heart Challenge initiative, aimed at promoting heart health among elementary and middle school students. Through physical activities and educational programs, the initiative seeks to instill lifelong healthy habits in children.

Mac's journey began in spring 2024 when he felt unusually breathless after football practice. Initially dismissing it as lack of fitness, he soon faced severe symptoms including a high fever, vomiting, and intense pain. Diagnosed with an enlarged heart and Becker Muscular Dystrophy, Mac's condition rapidly deteriorated into heart failure. Within 45 days of being admitted to the ICU, he underwent a successful heart transplant. Today, Mac is grateful for his second chance at life and hopes that sharing his story can inspire others facing similar challenges.

The American Heart Association's Kids Heart Challenge offers a variety of activities designed to engage young minds and bodies. From dance to basketball and jump rope, these activities are paired with Finn’s Mission, an online component where students earn digital badges for learning crucial life-saving skills like Hands-Only CPR and recognizing stroke symptoms. The program has a 50-year history of proven success, backed by scientific research showing that active children enjoy better mental health and self-esteem while reducing risks of anxiety and depression.

Rachel Stanely, the school engagement director for the AHA, emphasized the importance of equipping young people with the knowledge and habits needed for heart-healthy lives. Mac's participation this year adds a personal touch to the initiative, making it more meaningful for the students at Patrick Henry Academy. Kelsey Swaim, the PE teacher, expressed pride in hosting the event in honor of Mac, highlighting the close-knit community's support for his inspiring journey.

Patrick Henry Academy has been actively involved in the Kids Heart Challenge for several years, raising nearly $14,000 for the AHA. This year, the event holds special significance, symbolizing hope and resilience through the power of community and shared experiences. The American Heart Association continues its mission to promote healthier lives and ensure equitable health for all, driven by groundbreaking research and advocacy efforts.
