An extraordinary event took place at the Chamberlain Student Center on April 5, where Beauty in Distress (BID) showcased its annual fashion extravaganza titled "Element X." This vibrant gathering brought together designers, musicians, photographers, and art enthusiasts to celebrate the fusion of creativity and innovation. The theme revolved around the dynamic interplay of earth, air, fire, and water, symbolizing harmony amidst contrasts. Through this platform, numerous artists not only marketed their crafts but also built meaningful connections with peers.
Founded by Hydia Bearfield in 2017, BID officially became a recognized entity in 2020 under the leadership of Amya Dickens, a senior psychology major. Dickens has played a pivotal role in shaping the club's trajectory, rising from an event coordinator to president. Beyond organizing fashion shows, BID engages in diverse activities such as candle-making workshops, themed game nights, t-shirt design competitions, and awareness brunches. These initiatives reflect the group’s commitment to fostering confidence and self-expression among participants. Dickens emphasized that cultivating confidence is an ongoing journey rather than a learned skill, advocating for individuals to embrace their unique presence.
As the chapter transitions into new hands, sophomore Jimmy Lee will assume the presidency following Dickens' graduation. Lee envisions expanding the club's influence through larger events, increased membership, and enhanced collaborations. Alongside Vice President Caryn Gazama, they aim to redefine BID as a gender-inclusive space welcoming all talents and interests. By partnering with other university organizations like MOCA and WOCA, BID exemplifies the power of unity and shared purpose. Looking ahead, the club plans to establish a multi-chapter network with institutions like Rutgers University, amplifying its impact across campuses. Ultimately, BID serves as a nurturing ground for aspiring creatives, encouraging them to share their artistic voices with the world.
Creativity thrives when boundaries are broken, and communities come together to celebrate individuality. Beauty in Distress embodies this spirit by creating platforms where everyone can express themselves freely. As it continues to grow, the organization inspires others to pursue their passions boldly and inclusively, leaving a lasting legacy rooted in artistry and connection.
