The Montezuma-Cortez Middle School Band has experienced a remarkable transformation in recent years. Under the dedicated leadership of longtime director Andrew Campo, the program has grown exponentially, with the number of participants nearly doubling in the past few years. What was once a modest ensemble of around 130 students has now blossomed into a vibrant community of almost 240 musicians, making up nearly half of the school's entire student population.This surge in participation is a testament to the band's growing reputation and the infectious enthusiasm it has generated among the student body. "When I started here, we had about 130 kids or so in the program, and then with COVID, it dipped to about 70," Campo explains. "And this year we're almost 240, and our school has about 550 kids in it. So, almost every other kid in the school is in the band, which is great. Our band looks like our school, which is the way I want it to be."

Campo is quick to acknowledge the vital role that the community has played in the band's growth and development."The community's been great, but we live in a pretty small community, and to get these instruments from Bringing Music to Life has been a game-changer for us," Campo says. The Bringing Music to Life nonprofit, a Denver-based organization, has been instrumental in providing the Montezuma-Cortez Middle School Band with a steady stream of donated instruments over the past decade."We've received a grand total of 52 instruments. We literally could not have grown the way we have without their help," Campo acknowledges. This influx of donated instruments has been a crucial factor in the band's ability to accommodate the growing number of students interested in joining the program.
