Fostering a Culture of Musical Excellence
At Montezuma-Cortez Middle School, the band program has become the epicenter of the school's identity, with nearly half of the student body actively participating. This remarkable achievement is a testament to the unwavering dedication of director Andrew Campo and the unwavering support of the local community. "I guess success breeds success," Campo reflects, "When I started here, we had about 130 kids or so in the program, and then with COVID, it dipped to about 70. And this year we're almost 240, and our school has about 550 kids in it. So, almost every other kid in the school is in the band, which is great. Our band looks like our school, which is the way I want it to be."Overcoming Challenges with Community Collaboration
Campo is quick to credit the community for the band's remarkable success, but he also acknowledges the crucial role played by a Denver-based nonprofit, Bringing Music to Life. This organization has been a game-changer for the Montezuma-Cortez Middle School Band, providing a steady stream of donated instruments that have enabled the program to grow and thrive. "We've received a grand total of 52 instruments. We literally could not have grown the way we have without their help," Campo says. "The community's been great, but we live in a pretty small community, and to get these instruments from Bringing Music to Life has been a game-changer for us."Empowering Students Through Music
The impact of the Montezuma-Cortez Middle School Band extends far beyond the stage, as it provides students with a platform to express themselves and develop valuable life skills. Seventh-grader Anastasia, who received a donated trumpet, eloquently captures the transformative power of music, "I just really like music, and I feel like I connect to it. It's more opportunities for me. And I just really like the trumpet because I can express my feelings and emotions with it."Sustaining the Legacy: Challenges and Opportunities
As the Montezuma-Cortez Middle School Band continues to thrive, the challenges of maintaining this momentum are not lost on Campo. Securing donations for the Bringing Music to Life instrument drive is becoming increasingly difficult, as donors face the realities of clearing out their own closets and storage spaces. "If it weren't for Bringing Music to Life, I would have to turn students away, and that's never something I want to do. We don't have the money to just go out and buy 25 instruments," Campo explains. "And if it weren't for the very kind donations of the people that give to Bringing Music to Life and the members, the volunteers, the vendors who give up their time and their expertise, we couldn't do it. My program would be at least 50 people smaller because we got 52 instruments from them over the years. That's a game-changer. It is impacting kids' lives."Showcasing the Talent: Upcoming Performances
The Montezuma-Cortez Middle School Band is poised to showcase its exceptional talent in the coming months. On September 27th, they will join the high school's Marching Panthers for a performance at a home football game. Additionally, the band will be featured in the Homecoming Parade down Cortez's Main Street on October 9th, further solidifying their place as a source of community pride and inspiration. As the Montezuma-Cortez Middle School Band continues to captivate audiences and transform the lives of its students, the story of this remarkable program serves as a testament to the power of music to unite, inspire, and empower. Through the unwavering dedication of its director, the generosity of community partners, and the passion of its talented students, this band is leaving an indelible mark on the town of Cortez and beyond.
