As IMSA's VP Racing SportsCar Challenge prepares for its third season, the series is set to introduce a new class, Grand Touring Daytona X (GTDX), alongside the existing Le Mans Prototype 3 (P3) and Grand Sport X (GSX) categories. This expansion aims to provide teams and drivers with an additional entry point into IMSA, offering a cost-effective format with two 45-minute sprint races per weekend. The addition of GTDX, which features GT3-specification cars, will enhance the series' competitiveness and attract more participants. Additionally, IMSA plans to introduce a Bronze podium for each class, complementing the already established Bronze Cup Championship. With nearly 30 cars expected at the Roar Before the Rolex 24 weekend, the grid is shaping up to be highly competitive. Several prominent teams, including Turner Motorsport and Samantha Tan Racing, are eagerly preparing for this expanded format.

The Arrival of GTDX: A New Era in Sprint Racing

The introduction of the GTDX class marks a significant milestone for the VP Racing Challenge. By incorporating GT3-specification vehicles, the series offers a fresh opportunity for teams and drivers who prefer the sprint race format over endurance events. This new class not only diversifies the competition but also provides a stepping stone for drivers looking to gain experience before moving up to higher levels like the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship. The GTDX class is expected to attract a substantial number of entries, nearly doubling digits for its debut at the Roar Before the Rolex 24 weekend. Teams like Turner Motorsport see this as a logical progression for developing talent within their programs.

Turner Motorsport, BMW’s longest-serving privateer team, has been instrumental in shaping the VP Racing Challenge since its inception. Team owner Will Turner emphasizes that the series now serves as an ideal platform for drivers to build experience before advancing to more competitive classes. "With GTDX, we can offer drivers a chance to acclimate to GT3 cars without the overwhelming pressure of jumping straight into GTD," Turner explained. "This class provides a structured environment where drivers can hone their skills and prepare for the next level." The inclusion of GTDX aligns perfectly with IMSA's goal of fostering development within the sport, ensuring that participants have a clear path for advancement.

Enhancing Competitiveness and Accessibility

The VP Racing Challenge continues to refine its offerings, making it more accessible and appealing to both seasoned and aspiring racers. The introduction of a Bronze podium for each class adds another layer of competition, encouraging greater participation from bronze-rated drivers. This move underscores IMSA's commitment to nurturing talent across all skill levels. Moreover, the series has shifted away from the more expensive IPC (IMSA Prototype Challenge) format, adopting a refined sprint-race championship structure that is both affordable and efficient. Forte Racing, formerly US RaceTronics, highlights the benefits of this approach, noting that the series offers more television coverage compared to other formats, providing greater exposure for teams and drivers.

Teams such as Ave Motorsports recognize the value of the VP Racing Challenge as a training ground for those looking to compete on the larger IMSA stage. "The series allows drivers and teams to familiarize themselves with the high standards of professionalism required in IMSA," said Tony Ave, team owner of Ave Motorsports. "From mastering technical inspections to vehicle preparation, the VP Challenge series prepares participants for the rigors of top-tier racing." Additionally, new entrants like Samantha Tan Racing bring fresh energy to the series, aiming to capitalize on the multi-class format that includes LMP3, GT3, and GT4 cars. Samantha Tan, founder of Samantha Tan Racing, expressed her excitement about entering IMSA for 2025, stating, "This new format offers an excellent opportunity to sharpen our skills against some of the best in the sport while building towards our ultimate goal of securing the VP Challenge championship title."
