Tucson Humane Society Expands Pet Pantry to Keep Furry Friends at Home

The Humane Society of Southern Arizona (HSSA) has taken a significant step in supporting pet owners facing financial hardship. By expanding its Pet Pantry and Food Distribution program, the organization aims to ensure that beloved pets can remain with their loving families, preventing unnecessary surrenders.

Empowering Pet Owners, Strengthening the Bond

Increased Accessibility and Frequency

The HSSA has made it easier for pet owners to access the resources they need. Previously, the pet food distribution program was only available once a month, but now it has been expanded to four times a month. This increased frequency allows more pet owners to take advantage of the program and ensure their furry companions are well-fed.The expanded program not only provides dog and cat food but also includes essential items such as leashes, bedding, and crates, depending on the availability of community donations. This comprehensive approach ensures that pet owners have access to a wide range of necessities to care for their pets.

Reducing Barriers through Community Partnerships

To further enhance accessibility, the HSSA is collaborating with schools in the 85705 area to offer off-site distribution. This strategic move helps to address transportation challenges that some pet owners may face, making it easier for them to obtain the necessary resources.Kristin Barney, the CEO of the HSSA, emphasizes the importance of this initiative. "We want to make sure that pets who have loving families and loving homes are able to stay with them because we know how important the human-animal bond is, and we want to make sure that we have resources available in all of our animal shelters for the pets who are truly homeless and in most need."

Empowering Community Involvement

The expanded Pet Pantry and Food Distribution program has not only benefited pet owners but has also empowered community members to get involved. Kristen Kiernan, who works with the Trap, Neuter, Return (TNR) team at the HSSA, has been able to utilize the program to feed cats in her neighborhood.Kiernan shares her experience, "I didn't know about this program. It's not as widely known. And so I was trying to do all this by myself." The program has been a game-changer for Kiernan, enabling her to provide for the feline population in her area more effectively.

Sustaining the Vital Service

The HSSA's commitment to this program comes at a significant cost, with the organization spending over $3,000 a month to maintain it. Barney emphasizes the importance of community support, welcoming donations to ensure the continued provision of this vital service. The pet food distribution schedule is as follows:- First and Third Wednesdays of each month: 4:00-6:00 p.m.- First and Third Saturdays of each month: 8:00-10:00 a.m.By expanding the Pet Pantry and Food Distribution program, the Humane Society of Southern Arizona is making a tangible difference in the lives of pet owners and their beloved companions. This initiative not only keeps pets in their loving homes but also fosters a stronger sense of community and support for those facing financial hardship.
