As the new year approaches, it is a time to reflect and pay tribute to those who have left an indelible mark on the high school sports scene in Northeast Ohio. This article highlights some of the remarkable individuals who passed away in 2024, celebrating their contributions and remembering their legacies. Among them are Steve Bogas, Dan Coughlin, Tedd Kwasniak, and young Koby Looman. Each of these figures brought unique perspectives and dedication to the world of high school sports, leaving behind a legacy that will not be forgotten.
In the crisp autumn of 2024, the community mourned the loss of several influential figures in high school sports. Steve Bogas, a beloved hockey coach at Mayfield High School, succumbed to liver cancer on March 18 after a courageous battle. His leadership over 14 seasons saw the Wildcats claim Baron Cup III titles in 2010 and 2011. Even as his health declined, Bogas remained committed, transitioning to an assistant role under former player Jacob Macula.
The passing of Dan Coughlin on October 6 marked the end of an era for Cleveland sports media. A fixture on WJW and a former columnist for The News-Herald, Coughlin was deeply rooted in high school sports. For decades, he captivated audiences with his storytelling and coverage of Friday night football games. His larger-than-life personality earned him respect and admiration from colleagues and fans alike.
Tedd Kwasniak, a basketball coaching legend, also left us on October 29. His tenure at Villa Angela-St. Joseph (VASJ) was nothing short of extraordinary. Under his guidance, the Vikings secured multiple state championships and became a powerhouse in Northeast Ohio basketball. Kwasniak's influence extended beyond victories; he mentored countless young men, including his own grandsons B.K. and Quinn, during his final years at Cornerstone Christian Academy.
Tragically, 9-year-old Koby Looman did not survive a car accident on January 27. The son of former Mayfield girls basketball coach Ryan Looman, Koby's vibrant spirit touched many lives. The community rallied around the Looman family, organizing events like the Big Leaf President’s Day Elementary School Showcase to honor Koby's memory.
Each of these individuals contributed significantly to the rich tapestry of high school sports in Northeast Ohio. Their stories remind us of the profound impact coaches, media personalities, and young athletes can have on their communities.
From a journalist's perspective, the stories of these individuals underscore the importance of community and legacy. Steve Bogas' resilience, Dan Coughlin's passion for storytelling, Tedd Kwasniak's mentorship, and Koby Looman's innocence all highlight different facets of what it means to be part of a community. These losses remind us to cherish the moments we have and to honor the legacies left behind. They inspire us to continue their work, ensuring that future generations carry forward the values and lessons they imparted. In doing so, we keep their spirits alive and celebrate the enduring power of sports to bring people together.
