In a heartwarming ceremony, Jeff and Candy Waite, proprietors of the Gospel Mission Food Pantry, were honored with the Four Chaplains Legion of Honor for their unwavering commitment to community service. This prestigious accolade was presented during the 2025 Recognizing Excellence Awards Gala hosted by the Ronnie W. Davis Memorial Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #5108 in Marietta. The event also celebrated other notable figures who have made significant contributions to society, including newly commissioned Kentucky Colonels and recipients of various awards recognizing humanitarian efforts and distinguished service.

Established in 2011, the Gospel Mission Food Pantry has been a beacon of hope for countless individuals in need. Operated entirely on donations and without any government assistance, the pantry provides essential items such as food and clothing free of charge. According to Candy Waite, their mission extends beyond physical sustenance; they aim to nourish both body and spirit. Their dedication aligns closely with the principles of the Four Chaplains Legion of Honor, which celebrates those who serve selflessly within their communities.

The gala commenced with an introduction by Jared Smith, followed by remarks from Bill Kaemmer, executive director of the Four Chaplains organization. Kaemmer shared insights into the historical significance of the Four Chaplains, recounting the tale of four chaplains aboard the U.S. Army Transport Dorchester in 1943, who sacrificed their lives to save others. This narrative underscores the essence of selfless service that the Legion of Honor embodies.

Beyond the presentation of the Legion of Honor, the event featured the commissioning of new Kentucky Colonels, an honor bestowed by the Governor of Kentucky to recognize exceptional dedication to others. Attendees enjoyed a meal provided by Wilky’s Sports Bar while listening to speeches highlighting the achievements of all honorees. Among the awardees were Cole Stine and Liberty Smith, recipients of the Junior Legion of Honor, Gary Ward, awarded the Humanitarian Award, Brad Webb, recipient of the Distinguished Service Medal, and Michael A. Tucker, honored with the Bronze Medallion.

As the evening drew to a close, guests reflected on the profound impact of individuals like the Waites, whose tireless efforts continue to transform lives. Their receipt of the Legion of Honor not only acknowledges their past contributions but also inspires future generations to embrace similar values of compassion and service. Through their work at the Gospel Mission Food Pantry, the Waites exemplify how small acts of kindness can ripple outward, creating waves of positive change throughout the community.
