Gaming is undeniably a younger industry compared to film and TV. It's a realm that demands entrepreneurial spirit. The best people I know in this industry have often created their own jobs. In film and TV, one often has to wear multiple hats. But gaming is changing rapidly. In the short time I've been in the gaming industry, I've witnessed a radical transformation. It's easier to get involved and seek help when you're young in gaming. There are more senior women in film and TV, but even within a short time in games, the collaborative nature has been amazing. People, especially incredible women, have been quick to provide resources and education.
For example, at Lionsgate Games, where I'm part of the team, there are a lot of department heads who are women. We have a diverse group of voices at the table, and it feels normal. This normalization gives us confidence when we venture into other spaces where it might not be the norm. It shows that the gaming industry is evolving and becoming more inclusive.
Erika and I take mentorship very seriously. It's not just about fostering it in ourselves but also encouraging others to do the same. In the studio culture, there are often failures in mentoring those in subordinate roles. But we actively mentor junior employees and encourage them to pass it on. We believe that by offering mentorship, we can raise others up, even when it's not easy and they make mistakes.
For instance, when Ewing started at Lionsgate Games, I was an integral part of her career trajectory. We encourage others to reach out and introduce themselves to people in the industry they admire. By being generous with our time, we can create magic. It's about being there for each other and supporting one another's growth.
Gaming and entertainment are still predominantly male-driven, but more women leaders are emerging. Ewing credits her time with the Frag Dolls as a crucial part of her growth. Being around like-minded women, finding a place among them, and looking up to those a few steps ahead opened doors for her. We need to keep this trend alive by reaching out to our peers in supportive ways.
At Lionsgate, with its female-led and focused entertainment, we see the importance of having diverse voices at the table. It's not just about numbers but about creating an environment where everyone feels included and can contribute. This normalization of new perspectives is essential for the continued growth and success of the industry.
