The Wheeling Park tennis teams have achieved a remarkable feat by qualifying for the state tournament for the first time in their history. Both the boys' and girls' teams demonstrated exceptional performance in regional competitions, securing their spots against top-tier opponents across West Virginia. This achievement marks a significant milestone for the program since the introduction of team tournaments three years ago.
In addition to the Wheeling Park teams, other schools such as Wheeling Central, Oak Glen, and Weir also showcased their talents on the state stage. With players like Mason Smith advancing through challenging matches, this year's tournament promises thrilling encounters that will test the limits of each competitor.
Achieving New Heights: Boys' Team Success
The Wheeling Park boys' tennis team has made history by earning a place in the state championship after an impressive regional campaign. Ranked second in their region, they triumphed over formidable foes Buckhannon-Upshur and John Marshall before falling to Morgantown in the final. As eighth seeds in the Class AAA Tournament, they are set to face George Washington in the opening round.
This journey is not just about victories but reflects the hard work and dedication of every player. The roster features junior Aaron Chao at No. 1 singles, sophomore Asher Chao at No. 2, freshman Brooks Wharry at No. 3, and senior Max Seibert at No. 4. Doubles pairings include the Chao brothers at No. 1, Wharry and Seibert at No. 2, and Rex Montanye with Alex Zhao at No. 3. Coach Troy Salatino expressed excitement about competing against elite programs from Huntington, Charleston, and the eastern panhandle regions. Their determination and resilience have propelled them into uncharted territory where they aim to make a lasting impact.
Girls' Team Dominance and Individual Achievements
Similarly, the Wheeling Park girls' tennis team has reached new heights under coach Felix Riba. Securing the fifth seed in the state tournament, they advanced past University High School en route to their qualification. Standout performances came from junior Madeline Bradshaw, who clinched the No. 1 Singles OVAC Championship and her 100th career win recently. Paired with Lauren Eskins in doubles, she holds the third seed heading into the competition.
Beyond team accomplishments, individual brilliance shines through with players like Harper Moores and Reese Moores contributing significantly at Nos. 2 and 3 singles respectively. Ava Norman and Marissa Hunley complete the lineup at No. 3 doubles. Bradshaw’s previous experiences at the state level provide valuable insight, having reached the quarterfinals as a freshman and the finals last year. Her regional title adds momentum heading into matches against tough competitors like Sam Breeden from Washington High. Meanwhile, other schools like Oak Glen and Weir contribute further depth to the tournament field, ensuring high-quality play throughout all rounds scheduled until Saturday's championships.
