Cutting for a Cause: Hills Elementary's Inspiring Fundraiser for Children's Hospital

At Hills Elementary School, students and teachers came together for a heartwarming fundraising initiative that not only raised over $1,000 for Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh but also fostered a sense of community and compassion. The Caps for Kids with Cancer campaign, held from September 16-20, allowed students to cut the hair of their teachers and shave the beard of the school's guidance counselor, all in the name of supporting a worthy cause.

Empowering Students, Uplifting Spirits

Cutting for a Cure

The Caps for Kids with Cancer campaign was a resounding success, with students eagerly participating in the hair-cutting and beard-shaving activities. Third-grade students Connor Turick, Benjamin Gorby, and T.J. Clegg were selected to shave the facial hair of guidance counselor Steve Eft, while teachers Jessica Clegg and Amy Rusnak had their locks donated to Hair We Share. The students were thrilled to be a part of this meaningful event, as it allowed them to directly contribute to the fight against pediatric cancer.

A Lesson in Giving

Third-grade teacher Virginia Pawelczyk, who has organized the fundraiser for the hospital for the past nine years, expressed her delight at the outcome. "It is always a great feeling to help support a hospital that is working toward finding a cure for pediatric cancer. Not just to find cures but find cures without side effects," she said. Pawelczyk's dedication to the cause has resulted in the school raising over $12,000 for Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh over the years, a testament to the school's commitment to making a difference.

Honoring a Former Student

This year's contribution of $1,086 was made in memory of former student Brayden Tipton, a poignant reminder of the impact that pediatric cancer can have on a community. The students were deeply moved by the opportunity to support a cause that hits close to home, and their enthusiasm and generosity were palpable throughout the fundraising event.

A Lasting Impact

The Caps for Kids with Cancer campaign at Hills Elementary School has not only raised significant funds for a worthy cause but has also instilled in the students a sense of empowerment and a desire to make a positive difference in the world. By actively participating in the hair-cutting and beard-shaving activities, the students have learned the value of giving back and the importance of supporting those in need. This experience is sure to leave a lasting impression on the young minds of Hills Elementary, inspiring them to continue their efforts in the fight against pediatric cancer and other important causes.
