A high-speed chase involving a West Chester resident escalated across Delaware, covering over 45 miles and crossing multiple jurisdictions. The pursuit began due to a minor traffic violation but quickly intensified as the driver attempted to evade law enforcement, leading to significant damage and dangerous incidents. Eventually, the suspect was apprehended after crashing his vehicle and attempting to flee on foot.

The incident highlighted the risks associated with such pursuits and resulted in serious charges against the driver, including assault, reckless endangerment, and driving under the influence of drugs.

Pursuit Begins: Minor Violation Leads to High-Stakes Chase

What started as a routine traffic stop for a vehicle with a bare rim quickly turned into a high-stakes pursuit. On a Friday afternoon, around 12:45 PM, New Castle County Police initiated the chase when they noticed a BMW driven by Thomas Casey, a 22-year-old from West Chester, Pennsylvania. As Casey entered Middletown on State Route 1, Delaware State Police joined the pursuit, recognizing the escalating danger.

The situation rapidly deteriorated as parts of the BMW began detaching during the chase. Metal objects from the vehicle struck police cars, causing significant damage. A metal object hit the hood of one police vehicle, while a brake caliper shattered the windshield of another, narrowly missing an officer inside. As the chase progressed, Casey increased his speed, creating further hazards for both law enforcement and civilians. Attempts to deploy traffic spikes were thwarted as Casey swerved dangerously, nearly hitting officers who had to jump out of the way to avoid being struck.

Capture and Consequences: Crash and Arrest Following Dangerous Maneuvers

The pursuit finally came to an end near Frederica when Casey lost control of his vehicle. He crashed into a utility pole after hitting a traffic sign, disabling the car. In a last-ditch effort to escape, he fled on foot but was quickly apprehended by waiting officers. During the arrest, Casey resisted, causing minor injuries to the troopers involved.

Upon closer inspection, authorities noted signs of impairment. Casey was transported to a nearby barracks where a legal blood test confirmed suspicions. Charged with multiple offenses, including assault, reckless endangerment, resisting arrest with force, and driving under the influence of drugs, Casey now faces severe legal consequences. He is currently held at the Sussex Correctional Institution on a substantial cash bond.
