As expedition companies prepare for the upcoming climbing season on Mount Everest, they will trial drones capable of carrying significant loads at high altitudes. These unmanned aerial vehicles promise to lighten the burden on Nepali Sherpas, who traditionally navigate perilous routes while hauling heavy equipment and supplies for foreign climbers.

The potential benefits of these drones extend beyond mere convenience. With the ability to transport goods that would otherwise take seven hours by foot from base camp to Camp I in just 15 minutes, these devices could significantly reduce the risks faced by Sherpas. Climbing gear, essential items such as oxygen cylinders, and even ladders used to establish climbing routes can be efficiently ferried back and forth. Efforts to integrate drones into mountaineering logistics have been underway for approximately a year, with two donated units from a Chinese manufacturer undergoing testing.
