The first year of a healthcare apprenticeship initiative launched by the Iowa Valley Community College District (IVCCD) has exceeded expectations, showcasing significant success. The IVCCD Board of Directors received an update on this program's achievements during their monthly meeting. Spearheaded by partnerships between IVCCD and local healthcare providers, this initiative aims to address critical workforce shortages in the healthcare sector. Utilizing a substantial grant, the college developed programs for nursing, phlebotomy, and medical assisting, attracting considerable interest from aspiring healthcare professionals.

Building Strong Partnerships for Workforce Development

The program's success hinges on its collaborative approach, involving multiple healthcare organizations. Initially partnering with UnityPoint Health in Marshalltown and Grinnell, McFarland Clinic, and Hansen Family Hospital in Iowa Falls, the program has since expanded to include additional facilities like Oakview Nursing Home and Mayflower Community. This expansion ensures that students have ample opportunities to secure employment as they complete their coursework. The initial focus was on the certified nursing assistant (CNA) program due to the hospital's difficulty in filling these positions. Despite challenges, the program found innovative ways to proceed, drawing inspiration from similar initiatives in Waterloo.

A key milestone was the signing day at Marshalltown High School, where ten students who had completed CNA coursework committed to the program. Seven of these students successfully began their apprenticeships, with several showing exceptional performance and receiving job offers. One student is now pursuing a career as a licensed practical nurse, highlighting the program's potential as a stepping stone for further advancement in healthcare careers. The program's flexibility allows participants to grow and develop their skills while providing valuable patient care experience.
