Hasbro CEO Assumes Direct Control Over Wizards of the Coast Amidst Leadership Transition

In a significant development for the gaming industry, Hasbro's Chief Executive Officer, Chris Cocks, has directly assumed supervision of Wizards of the Coast. This transition follows the departure of John Hight, the former president of Wizards, the entity behind blockbuster franchises such as 'Magic: The Gathering' and 'Dungeons & Dragons'. This temporary leadership structure ensures continuity as the company embarks on a thorough search for a new president.

John Hight's resignation from his role as president of Wizards of the Coast and Digital Gaming became effective on September 1, as initially disclosed in a U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission filing on July 27. This announcement came shortly after Hasbro's latest earnings call, underscoring the timing of the transition. While Hight will serve in an advisory capacity for a year, the immediate question arose regarding the leadership vacuum for Wizards' acclaimed game portfolios. In response, Hasbro confirmed that Wizards' current leadership team would directly report to CEO Chris Cocks, thus eliminating the need for an interim president at the subsidiary level.

Hasbro emphasized the continued operational and financial strength of Wizards, highlighting the robust performance of 'Magic: The Gathering' and 'Dungeons & Dragons'. Furthermore, the company reassured stakeholders that its significant video game releases scheduled for 2027, 'Exodus' and 'Warlock', are progressing as planned. Hight himself offered a more personal reflection on his LinkedIn, indicating that his departure was not a retirement but an opportunity to pursue teaching, creative projects, and further engage with the gaming world. He also lauded the talented individuals who continue to drive Wizards' success.

The existing leadership team at Wizards includes key figures overseeing its most valuable intellectual properties. Rebecca Shepard was promoted to Senior Vice President and Global Play Lead for Studio X, Wizards' internal 'Magic' division, earlier this year. Concurrently, Aaron Forsythe ascended to Senior Vice President of 'Magic' Design and Creative. Their roles are crucial in shaping player experiences and guiding the broader creative direction of 'Magic'. 'Dungeons & Dragons' remains under the leadership of Dan Ayoub, who took the helm in July 2025. Ayoub has been instrumental in implementing a consolidated model for the D&D franchise, integrating books, video games, film, and television projects under a unified strategy. This approach also includes significant crossovers, mirroring 'Magic's' successful Universes Beyond initiative, with a 'World of Warcraft' crossover set to launch in November.

Chris Cocks' direct involvement is not entirely new; he previously served as president of Wizards from 2016 until becoming Hasbro CEO in 2022, a period marked by substantial growth for 'Magic'. His deep understanding of the gaming sector has kept him closely involved in Hasbro's gaming strategy, where 'Magic' has consistently been identified as a primary revenue generator. During Hasbro's July 21 earnings call, Cocks himself detailed a revised digital gaming portfolio strategy, which included the cancellation of several games beyond 2028 and a significant write-down. This strategic pivot, focusing on 'focus, cost discipline, ownable platforms and partnership', signals a concentrated effort on trading card games and role-playing games, particularly 'Magic', 'D&D', 'Arena', and 'D&D Beyond', with an increased reliance on development and publishing partners.

This direct oversight by Hasbro's CEO means that decisions regarding the future direction of 'Magic', 'D&D', and Wizards' digital games are now directly influenced by Cocks. This reinforces his earlier statement in a March interview where he described games, anchored by Wizards of the Coast, as one of Hasbro's three core business pillars. When asked about resolving competing priorities across various divisions, Cocks' succinct response was, 'Usually, it's me.' With no intermediate president at Wizards, this assertion now holds more truth than ever, positioning Cocks at the forefront of the company's gaming future.
