This clarity is best maintained when the number of participants is capped at around 20 for significant combat events. Johanson noted that exceeding this number often transforms combat into a mere spectacle, making it difficult for players to understand and respond effectively to the gameplay dynamics, a common critique of Guild Wars 2's larger battles where visual clutter and performance issues could detract from the experience.

The philosophy behind this smaller scale is rooted in the desire for meaningful player interaction. Instead of simply increasing player counts, Guild Wars 3 aims to foster environments where individual contributions and coordinated strategies are more pronounced. Players will still frequently encounter others in the open world, reflecting a seamless transition that encourages spontaneous collaboration. Furthermore, while combat zones will be more contained, major cities and towns will not share these player limits, allowing for vibrant and bustling social hubs. Grouping with friends will also be more straightforward, as the game moves away from restrictive server structures towards a more flexible instancing system, where 'fences' rather than 'walls' define boundaries, facilitating easier co-op play.
