In the heart of downtown Portland, a new culinary destination has emerged, blending local flavors with luxurious ambiance. The Flock Food Hall, situated within the prestigious Ritz-Carlton hotel, spans an entire city block on Southwest Ninth Avenue. This innovative dining space aims to foster community and celebrate cultural diversity through food. Opened on January 30, 2025, Flock features a variety of locally-owned eateries offering international cuisines, complemented by beverage options and upcoming events designed to engage both locals and visitors alike.
On a crisp winter day in late January, the Flock Food Hall officially opened its doors at the intersection of SW Alder and 9th Avenue in Portland, Oregon. Steven Fang, one of the lead developers and co-owners, envisions Flock as more than just a collection of restaurants; it’s a place where people can gather and build a sense of community. The grand opening ceremony on Sunday, February 2nd, included a traditional lion dance to honor the Lunar New Year, symbolizing prosperity and good fortune for the new venture.
Flock is home to six distinct food establishments, each bringing unique culinary traditions to the table. From South Korean fried chicken at bb.q Chicken to Middle Eastern delights at Queen Mama’s Kitchen, diners can explore a world of flavors without leaving the block. Additional offerings include seafood from Pan Roast PNW, Thai cuisine at ZabPinto Thai Kitchen, birria tacos at Birrieria La Plaza, and Chinese fare at HK Cafe. Beyond the food stalls, guests can enjoy craft beers at Prime Tap House, pastries at Tous les Jours, and wines from the upcoming Nest and Vine winery.
The development of Flock faced several challenges, including delays and vendor changes. Initially announced in 2023, the project received a $3 million loan from the City of Portland to ensure its completion. Despite setbacks, key vendors like Queen Mama’s Kitchen and Birrieria La Plaza, which were previously part of the Alder Street food cart pod, have returned to bring back a piece of Portland’s vibrant street food culture.
For many involved in creating Flock, the goal was not only to provide exceptional dining experiences but also to revitalize downtown Portland. Steven Fang expressed his desire to showcase the best of the city to visitors while addressing negative perceptions that have plagued Portland in recent media coverage. By hosting events such as summer markets and monthly rotating dinner services, Flock aims to become a hub of activity and a gathering place for the community.
Darrah Fudge, the private dining and events director, emphasized the importance of collaboration among the chefs and vendors. The first set dinner menu, featuring dishes from each stall paired with wines from Nest and Vine, will debut for Valentine’s Day. This initiative highlights the diverse culinary landscape of Portland and promotes mutual success among the participating businesses.
Ultimately, Flock represents a significant step towards reactivating downtown Portland.
