Google is making its artificial intelligence-powered video editing platform, Vids, more widely accessible. Previously limited to Google Workspace and AI plan subscribers, a fundamental version of Vids, equipped with templates, stock media, and a selection of AI functionalities, is now available to a broader user base. This strategic move aims to democratize sophisticated video creation tools, empowering more individuals and organizations to produce compelling visual content with greater ease.
Launched last year as a key addition to Google’s suite of Workspace applications, Vids was designed to streamline the production of video presentations. Its initial iteration offered a range of AI-powered editing and creation features, including smart storyboard generation with suggested scenes, diverse stock imagery, and integrated background music options. The objective was to simplify complex video production processes, making them more efficient and user-friendly for business and educational contexts.
While the newly available free version retains many of the core capabilities that define Vids, it excludes some of the more advanced AI features introduced recently. Notably, the ability to generate AI-powered avatars that can deliver messages on a user's behalf is reserved for paying subscribers. This premium functionality allows users to select from a dozen pre-designed avatars, each with distinct appearances and vocal characteristics, and then input custom scripts for them to articulate. However, the option to create personalized AI avatars based on a user's own likeness, a feature offered by some competitors like Zoom, is not currently available in Vids, with Google indicating no immediate plans for its implementation.
Beyond the avatar capabilities, Google is also enhancing Vids' existing video generation functionalities. A new development allows for the creation of concise, eight-second videos that seamlessly integrate specific images, such as those depicting a new product. Furthermore, for presentations that feature a user's own recorded video, an AI-powered tool has been introduced to automatically identify and eliminate filler words and pauses, ensuring a more polished and professional delivery. These innovations underscore Google's commitment to continuously refine the platform, making video editing more intuitive and efficient for a diverse range of applications.
These expanded capabilities and broader access reflect Google's conviction that AI-driven video tools can revolutionize content production for businesses. The company believes that by simplifying and accelerating the creation of materials such as product demonstrations, training modules, and customer support content, Vids can lead to significant savings in both time and financial resources. Industry insights highlight that producing a ten-minute video with human actors can demand up to six months and incur costs in the tens of thousands of dollars, encompassing scriptwriting, iterative revisions, studio time, recording, and post-production. According to Vishnu Sivaji, a product director at Google, feedback from customers indicates that Vids significantly amplifies the capacity for video creation and dramatically increases the frequency with which such content can be produced, fundamentally changing the landscape of corporate video development.
