The International Testing Agency (ITA) has introduced a new training initiative aimed at healthcare professionals with clinical qualifications in blood collection. This program, designed for nurses, physicians, and phlebotomists, will prepare them to apply their skills in the international sports anti-doping field. The ITA's International Blood Collection Officer (IBCO) Training Program follows the successful launch of its International Doping Control Officer (IDCO) program, which has already trained over 1600 professionals from 133 countries. The IBCO program ensures that athletes worldwide can trust the safety, respect, and professionalism of doping control procedures. Developed in collaboration with numerous National and Regional Anti-Doping Organizations and Sample Collection Agencies, this comprehensive curriculum aligns with World Anti-Doping Agency standards.

Enhancing Professional Skills for Anti-Doping Roles

The IBCO Training Program is crafted to equip healthcare professionals with the necessary knowledge and confidence to work within the international anti-doping framework. Participants will learn how to apply their clinical expertise to ensure that doping control processes meet global best practices. By participating in this program, professionals gain opportunities to expand their career prospects and contribute to maintaining integrity in sports.

Blood Collection Officers play an essential role in anti-doping efforts by collecting blood samples from athletes. The ITA’s training program covers various aspects of blood sample collection, including adherence to anti-doping regulations and best practices. Healthcare professionals will also receive training on extended roles such as chaperoning athletes, witnessing sample collections, managing blood transport logistics, and overseeing testing administration. This comprehensive education prepares participants to become integral members of anti-doping teams at major sporting events, thereby opening doors to new professional opportunities in the fight against doping.

Promoting Global Integrity and Safety in Sports

The ITA aims to provide all athletes with consistent, professional, and safe anti-doping operations regardless of their sport or location. The IBCO Training Program emphasizes harmonized processes and prioritizes the integrity of clean sport. With the support of partner organizations, the ITA seeks to enhance the skills and expertise of the global anti-doping workforce.

Benjamin Cohen, Director General of the ITA, expressed enthusiasm about the launch of the IBCO Training Program. He highlighted the program's objective to offer athletes worldwide standardized and professional anti-doping procedures that prioritize safety and integrity. The ITA invites all relevant organizations to join this initiative to collectively elevate the capabilities of the anti-doping community. Expressions of interest for the first training events in April 2025 are now open, marking a significant step towards a more robust and unified approach to anti-doping in sports.
