The prestigious Melbourne Royal Australian International Beer Awards (AIBA) has officially opened its doors to entries, marking the start of the world's largest annual beer competition. This year brings significant updates, including new categories for cider and perry, additional trophies, and fresh classes that reflect evolving industry trends. The event will celebrate brewing excellence from around the globe, offering invaluable feedback from an esteemed panel of judges. Participants will compete for a total of 14 major trophies and 24 category awards, with special recognition for independent breweries through two new trophies. The inclusion of cider and perry adds a unique platform for these beverages, while three innovative beer classes ensure the competition remains at the forefront of brewing innovation.

Pioneering Recognition for Independent Brewers

The collaboration between the Independent Brewers Association (IBA) and Melbourne Royal sets a new milestone for independent brewers on the global stage. For the first time in 2025, independent brewing excellence will be celebrated with two new trophies: Champion Australian Independent Beer and Champion Australian Independent Brewery. This initiative aims to recognize and promote the unique contributions of independent brewers despite the temporary pause of the Independent Beer Awards in 2025.

Kirrily Waldhorn, senior manager F&B Awards at Melbourne Royal, expressed enthusiasm about this development, emphasizing the organization's commitment to supporting the Australian independent brewing industry. The introduction of these trophies ensures that independent breweries receive the recognition they deserve, fostering innovation and growth within the sector. Despite the absence of the Independent Beer Awards, the collaboration with Melbourne Royal provides a valuable platform for independent brewers to showcase their craft and gain international visibility.

Innovative Expansions in Categories and Classes

The AIBA has introduced several new categories and classes to keep pace with the dynamic brewing industry. Notably, the addition of a Cider and Perry category offers cideries a chance to compete for Best Cider or Perry and Champion Cider or Perry Producer. These new categories provide a unique opportunity for cider makers to highlight their innovation and quality in both draught and packaged formats. Furthermore, three new beer classes—Australian-Style Low Carbohydrate Lager, Italian-Style Pilsner, and Red India Pale Ale—reflect current market trends and consumer preferences.

Melbourne Royal CEO Brad Jenkins highlighted the importance of these additions, stating that they underscore the organization's dedication to promoting innovation and growth in the industry. Updates to European beer style definitions and a revised minimum ABV for India Pale Ale classes ensure that the competition remains relevant and cutting-edge. To streamline the entry process, Melbourne Royal has partnered with cold-chain logistics provider Chill, offering exclusive rates for interstate entrants. This collaboration takes the stress out of organizing freight, making it easier for participants to focus on showcasing their best brews.
